BROKEN KNOB, CONNECTICUT — On a recent edition of the daily YouTube broadcast of his podcast recording, self-described “classical liberal and small L libertarian” Mitchell North told his audience that he was not going to defend fellow libertarian Gavin McInnes’ recent comments regarding Trump hats and the LGBT community.
Several outlets have covered Mr. McInnes’ commentary in which he proclaimed that proudly wearing “MAGA hats” — the baseball style caps with Trump’s “Make America Great Again” slogan embroidered on them — is “like being openly gay in 1950.”
“Here in New York City, wearing a MAGA hat is like being openly gay in 1950, and I’m not exaggerating,” McInnes said on Tuesday’s episode of his CRTV program. “You will get your ass beat, you will not last at a bar in Harlem—we try it all the time and get booted out. There’s many bars that say, ‘You cannot openly be here.’ If you go into a bar wearing a MAGA hat, people start getting uncomfortable. The bartender will ask you to leave politely and people will yell at you on the street and spit on you.”

Perhaps surprisingly, North — who is often in the same ideological camp as McInnes — said he doesn’t want to defend the comments. However, his reasoning could be considered unconventional.

“I don’t think Gavin went far enough with his analogy, that’s why I ain’t defendin’ it,” North said. “He was close. Gavin was real close to nailing it. But actually, being openly pro-Trump is exactly like being a black slave, before Lincoln’s war of aggression brought with it the massive government overreach of the 13th, 14th, and 15th Amendments.”
North reasoned that being pro-Trump in 2018 in America is like being a black slave in the same country 200 years ago.
“Think about it, fam. Black people were legally not humans, and could count on no protection from the government,” North said. “Which meant they could be separated from their families, beaten, starved, raped, and murdered before they were 15 years old.:
North paused.
“And Trumpers? We get called mean names and made fun of, or asked to take our HATS OFF,” Mitch said with raw emotion in his voice, and tears in his eyes. “If that’s not the exact same thing then I don’t know that we live in America anymore, Billy.”
Billy, Mitch’s sidekick, spat some tobacco spittle into a Busch can he was holding and agreed with North.
“In fact, in a lot of ways, I’d say it’s pretty obvious that being a white, middle-aged, conservative, pro-Trump male in this country is totally WORSE than being a slave in the early 19th century,” North posited. “Think about it. Slaves at least got to eat for free, and they got a roof over their heads, usually Nowadays we white men are the ones getting crapped on AND we pay for everyone’s shit.”
Mitch paused and thought for a moment.
“Well, you know, someone’s paying. I’m not. I’m technically on disability, but you get my drift,” Mitch said to Billy who, once again, spat tobacco spit and agreed with the show’s host.
