McConnell: “We Didn’t Pack the Court, We Changed the Rules to Force More Conservatives Onto It”

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Constitution and Mitch McConnell were often at odds during his tenure as Senate Majority Leader. In particular, McConnell and the nation’s foundational document seemed to never quite agree on whether or not presidents are entitled to nominate justice to the Supreme Court bench for their entire term. The Constitution said that could happen, but McConnell made up a rule that said only white Republicans can rush judges onto the Supreme Court.

When Joe Biden defeated Donald Trump in last year’s election, one of the key issues driving voters to the polls was the possibility that Biden would be open to helping Senate Democrats expand the size of the Supreme Court to offset the gamesmanship that McConnell had been engaged in himself over the past couple of years. Republicans immediately started blasting Democrats for wanting to “pack” the Supreme Court by adding at least two more seats and allowing Biden to nominate the people who would fill them.

In an interview on Fox News this weekend, McConnell insisted that anyone drawing comparisons to what Senate Democrats are doing now to what he did to ensure that Neil Gorsuch, Brett Kavanaugh, and Amy Covid Barrett were all installed on the bench are “doing the country a great disservice by making an accurate observation.”

“One might call us hypocrites, but only if they disregard the delicate nature of our base,” McConnell explained. “The simple truth is that things are just different when we Republicans do them, mostly because we say it’s different, but still. The bottom line is simple here: we didn’t pack the court; we changed the rules to force more conservatives onto it.”

McConnell insisted that Democratic efforts to expand the Supreme Court are “the most obvious and naked political power plays” he’s ever seen.

“And if anyone knows about political power plays, it’s the guy whose entire career has been built on political power plays! Without political power plays, I’d be a simple, coal-fuckin’ turtle from Kentucky,” McConnell said. “So believe me, if I’m saying something is a political power play, it is. It’s the same as when OJ Simpson says something is a murder, or if Ted Cruz says something is a booger eating shitdick. Same exact concept.”
