Barack O’Hitler – The Right Wing’s Favorite Past Time Debunked

If there’s one thing we learned over the last four years of a Barack Obama Presidency, it’s that a vocal minority really enjoys comparing Obama to Hitler. Everyone’s seen on Facebook photos from various tea party Facebook Pages with ominous sounding warnings about how President Obama and Hitler’s rise is so similar, we may as well prepare for the next Holocaust. – who President Obama is going to kill is still murky, but the implied message is generally that President Obama will be rounding you up if you don’t like this particular page’s photo espousing the dangers of a Center Right President with a (D) after his name in the White House.

My favorite so far however has to be the tea party infested Facebook pages where they put together things like this photo and an e-mail digest for their readers to “like:”

My favorite part is the burning World Trade Center in the background… as if a State Senator from Illinois had something to do with the 9/11 attacks – Although, this is brought to you by the party who still believes that Iraq had something to do with 9/11, so I suppose it’s not much of a stretch that a much younger and less politically connected Obama must have been in on it. Expect the invasion of O’Hare to begin immediately.

However, the best part is the text that comes along with a photo like this. I’ve pasted the quote below (beware, it’s long and filled with stuff crazier than anything your weirdo uncle e-mails you with the subject line of FWD:FWD:FWD:FWD:FWD:FWD:FWD), along with supposed “Facts” that “prove” Obama = Hitler. I left all misspellings intact:

Similarities Between Obama And Hitler

A Factual Comparision

The similarities are terrifying, the conclusion inevitable. On March 23, 1933, the German Parliment met to consider passing a bill that Adolf Hitler had created called the Enabling Act. It was officially called the ‘Law for Removing the Distress of the People and the Reich.’ Why were the German people in such distress? Because their government was in utter chaos, and the German leaders wanted to reassure the people that everything would be ok. The only fly in the ointment was that the Nazis had, behind the scenes, caused the distress themselves by creating the crisis, so that they could step in and solve it. Sound familiar?

Hitler promised the German people that the government would “make use of these powers only insofar as they are essential for carrying out vitally necessary measures…The number of cases in which an internal necessity exists for having recourse to such a law is in itself a limited one.” So the German congress voted on the bill, with the end result being the legal destruction of the German Democratic Republic. The bill gave Hitler enormous, unprecedented powers to do as he saw fit for the government of the German people. It was the act that offically created a legal dictator who was answerable to no one. The people cheered, and National Socialism became the law of the land from that day forward.

Today, Barack Obama is changing times and laws in America, giving himself unprecedented power never before seen. His ObamaCare bill. now the law of the land, empowers him to create his own private army, forces citizens to abide by unconstitutional laws, and will use the IRS in much the same way that Hitler used his brown shirts to make people get in line behind his policies. Many Americans will awake to late to the fact that Obama has subverted the United States Constitution, and stolen our precious liberties and freedoms. That’s why Obama’s followers are encouraged and taught to follow and have faith in Obama the man, and not in our God or in our country. This is exactly the ploy that Hitler used to great and terrible effect in Nazi Germany.

They’re not too far off with the historic facts of the Enabling Act, but their argument immediately falls apart once it conflates the dissolution of a Central Government with providing people with HealthCare. It would be amusing to me that so many people around America right now believe that taking care of sick people = President Obama giving himself dictatorial powers if the implication weren’t so scary. Unfortunately for conspiracy nuts, that’s the exact opposite of what happened with the ACA.

So much derp…

Instead, President Obama passed a bill through our Congress receiving 218 votes in the House and 60 in the Senate. Negotiations over the bill were fast and furious with a lot of give and take, between 535 different Senators, Congresspeople and their aides. Debate on the bill lasted for almost an entire year. Many people (read, Liberals such as myself) were unhappy with the final bill (I’m still holding out hope for Single Payer someday in my lifetime). Despite the angry placards, and the astroturfed Tea Party, the Affordable Care Act was passed on March 23rd, 2010 using the same legislative process we’ve had in America for the last 237 years. Not to mention the many legal challenges to the bill that reached the highest court in the land and final authority on legislation. In a 5-4 vote, the Supreme Court upheld the legislation, and the ACA became the law of the land. Now, states (the ultimate in laboratories for democracy) have begun exchanges in anticipation of the ACA being implemented in 2014. California along with New York and Massachusetts lead the way, no surprise considering the blueness of those respective states.

I must have missed CNN when President Obama ordered the raiding and arrest of all Republican leaders in order to pass his bill to keep people from being denied for pre-existing conditions. But the very best part is the gem that states President Obama will have his own private army to enforce the ACA. When I read this, I immediately imagined men and women in Camo forcing doctors to treat cancer at gunpoint.

Some people would balk at the comparison between Hitler and Obama, saying it was unfair. After all, Hitler started WWII and killed 11,000,000 Jews and Gentiles in death camps, and Obama has done nothing like that. Well, it’s only unfair if you compare Hitler at the end of his rule to the beginning of Obama’s. But if you compare Hitler and Obama at the beginning of their rise to power, it’s extremely fair.

Some people? How about EVERYONE??? And we’re four years into a Barack Obama presidency. If we’re following the analogy, by this time Hitler had already.

Similarities between Adolf Hitler & Barack Hussein Obama:

• Both Hitler and Obama held rallies in outdoor stadiums to excite and inflame the people’s passions. Frequently women would faint or break into tears.

So did the Beatles, but you don’t see anyone accusing them of wanting to rise to power and eliminate whole swaths of people. Although that would explain a whole lot about Yoko…

• Both Hitler and Obama wrote ghost-written autobiographies prior to the start of their run for political office. Hitler wrote “Mein Kampf (My Struggle)”, and Obama wrote “Dreams Of My Father.”  Both men then wrote a second book talking about their goals for Germany and America. Hitler wrote “A New World Order”, and Obama wrote “The Audacity of Hope.”

This is a pretty common misstatement… well… lie that the right wing likes to repeat – the idea that President Obama didn’t write his books. Not to mention the fact that while Mein Kampf focused on Adolf Hitler’s obsession with the Jewish People and how they were a threat to world peace, President Obama’s books mostly focused on his life growing up in Hawaii, how he approached the political process.  His manuscript was filled with his admitted errors in judgment he made while growing up like smoking weed or snorting cocaine. You won’t find too many similarities between the two books. Hell, I’ll even buy you a highlighter and all three books to compare for yourself… I’ll make sure to include the receipt for the highlighter as you won’t need it and you may as well return it to get your money back.
